Cagers End Year In Regional

The varsity cagers concluded their season on Monday, February 27, with a hard‑fought but convincing defeat at the hands of Elmhurst's Immaculate Conception, 71‑55.

The Knights of Immaculate Conception are truly one of the most incredible teams to face West this year. They used a run‑and‑shoot type of offense against the Warriors, and their outside shooting was practically flawless. Although the Westmen had the advantages in height and rest, their opponents played a more error‑free ball game.

Immaculate Conception reeled off two baskets before Maine got on the scoreboard. Then the Knights, led by their spectacular guard, Jim Morgan, dynamically pounded through seven straight points. This produced a deficit

from which the Warriors never completely recovered. They trailed by 16 points at halftime. Although they rallied in the third quarter, they could only play Immaculate Conception even for the second half.

The thumping that the Warriors dealt to Wheeling enabled West to finish the Conference season in a tie for third place. At the game's beginning, however, things looked bad for Maine, as the Wildcats jumped out to a 17‑9 first quarter lead. Creeping slightly closer in the second frame, the Warriors went into the locker room at the half trailing 33‑30.

Second-half play by Maine was entirely different from their play in the first half. All of the Warrior five popped in shots from everywhere as they ran past Wheeling into the final quarter. Maine outscored Wheeling by 14 points in the fourth quarter to win easily, 72 to 56.
