A former Maine West student, Mrs. Marcia Ryberg, has returned to this school in a different role. The 5' 4" brown-haired, brown‑eyed native of Buffalo, New York, is one of this year's additions to the Language Department as a Spanish I and II teacher.
A member of Sigma Delta Pi, a national Spanish honorary society, and the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Mrs. Ryberg enjoys singing and won the Music Department Award when she graduated from high school.
She recalls her happiest moment as 'having the opportunity to study in Latin America." Other memorable events in her life took place last summer when she was working in the public relations department of Wesley Memorial Hospital. Once, Wally Phillips called to ask about Leo Durocher. Mrs. Ryberg, however, didn't know the conversation was on the air.
Mrs. Ryberg has spent most of her life in Des Plaines. A Maine West graduate, she also attended Maine East High School. Later, she went to the College of Wooster in Ohio, Northern Illinois University, and the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia.
Having lived in Latin America, Mrs. Ryberg noticed many differences between it and the United States. There, boys and girls go to separate schools, so "People sort of looked at me when I said I went to a public school."

Mr. James Gary is experiencing his first year at Maine West as a counselor. He is also a cosponsor of Boys' Club.
"The only thing that I don't like about Maine is that some of the students want to be treated like adults and act like children. They really aren't mature enough to be treated like adults, and they also walk around with a chip on their shoulder," stated Mr. Gary.
"My advice to the students is to put more thought to the selection of their courses and not want to drop a course every time they run into a problem." Mr. Gary also said, "They should plan ahead for post high school employment or for college.
"The best thing about Maine is the relationship between the students and the teachers, the building itself, and the faculty." He added, "The school is an excellent one, and I hope we can keep up our high standards."
Mr. Gary attended St. Mel High School and Lewis College where he earned his bachelor's degree in psychology. He also attended Northern Illinois University, where he acquired his master's in counseling.
"The school spirit is good compared to the neighboring schools of Chicago and others. The Pep Club is doing a good job helping the school spirit. The relationship between the students and the teachers also helps school spirit," 'commented Mr. Gary.
