Special tribute was paid to the late Mr. Harold G. Baer, physical education teacher and varsity swimming coach, on the day of his funeral, March 29. Mr. Baer died Easter Sunday after a short illness and was buried in Crystal Lake, where he made his home.
A brief memorial notice was read in all classes and followed by a minute of silence. The American flag in front of Maine West was flown at half staff that day. Many students and various faculty members attended the funeral.
Mr. Baer came to teach at Maine Township High School in 1938 as a member of the Physical Education Department and track and swimming coach. He held a master's degree from Indiana University.
He was a past president of the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches' Association and of the Midwest Swimming Coaches' Association. He is survived by his wife and seven children and three grandchildren.
Mr. Herman Rider, principal, noted, "The passing of Mr. Baer leaves an empty place in the hearts of all at Maine West a place that will be hard to fill."
