Varsity Batmen Pulverize Evanston
Wildkits, 3-1

Coach Al Carstens' varsity diamondmen walked off with a 3‑1 victory over Evanston last Monday. This was the season's opener in the Warriors' 1967 baseball campaign. A game with Oak Park was rained out on Saturday, April 1, and was rescheduled for Wednesday, April 12.

In the win over the Wildkits, the Warriors coupled excellent fielding with timely hitting to master their hosts. Although they collected only four hits in the game, the Westmen committed only two fielding errors and employed superb baserunning to outscore Evanston.

Maine West's starting lineup included Dick Manny in center field, Phil Murdock in left field, Bob Banger at first base, Harry Tistle in right field, Kurt Felde at third base, Tom Kehe at second base, Bruce Kaechele at shortstop, and Craig Rowells behind the plate.

Al Fritz was the starting pitcher and hurled three innings before replacing Tistle in right field. Tistle then came in to pitch the remaining four innings to get credit for the victory.

The second and fourth innings were the biggest innings for the Warrior offense. In the second frame Harry Tistle drew a walk and then proceeded to steal second base and third base. Bruce Kaechele finally popped a single to drive in the first score of the game.

The fourth inning for West proved to be even more profitable, as they iced the game with two more runs. Bob Banger drew a base on balls and was advanced to second base by Harry Tistle's base hit single. Banger and Tistle then executed a double steal, and both scored on sacrifice ground balls by Felde and Kehe. Going into the sixth inning, West led 3‑0.

Evanston tallied their only run in the seventh inning. Corcoran, the right fielder, reached first base on an error and went to second base on another Warrior miscue. The Wildkit second baseman, Perrin, then proceeded to drive in a run with a single. Both teams went scoreless in the seventh inning, and Maine West had again beaten this Suburban League rival.

After the Oak Park game on next Wednesday, Maine will begin its assault on the teams of the Mid‑Suburban League.
