Tri‑S, DAR Give Awards

Diane Meyers '68 was named as the Best American History Student at Maine West on April 18. Diane received a medallion and a certificate of merit from the Daughters of the American Revolution and a $25 savings bond from Tri‑S, Maine's local social science club, to honor her showing.

The award was presented by Mr. Glenn Hoffmann, head of the Social Science Department. This award is usually presented by a representative of the DAR, but a representative was unable to attend this year's presentation.

Thirty other students were presented with life memberships in the Maine Historical Society. Four other juniors were runners‑up and received certificates of merit. These students were Bob Schwenke, Louis Volberding, John Thvedt, and John Moore.

All students who are taking American history and have a B average in the field of history were eligible to take the examination. The high scorer on the test was then named Maine's Best American History Student and presented with the medallion and a $25 bond.

The examination consisted of over 100 questions in the field of American history. The 30 students who scored 85 or higher were presented with membership in Maine West's Historical Society.

The society is primarily an honorary one. Activities of the society are decided upon by the members. Social Science teacher Mr. James Leming is the sponsor of the society, and Norine Meister '67 was this year's president.
