N. Meister, E. Wittman Receive
National Merit Scholarships

Norine Meister '67 and Elissa Wittman '67 are Maine West's two finalists and winners in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Last spring these two girls along with 804,468 other students from high schools throughout the country took the National Merit qualifying test. This fall when they found they were among the 14,000 semi‑finalists, they took another test and qualified as finalists.

About 97 per cent of the semifinalists went on to become finalists this year. Norine and Elissa were selected because of their high scores on a second three-hour examination (the Scholastic Aptitude Test of the College Entrance Examination

Board), participation in extracurricular activities, qualities of leadership and citizenship, academic records, and endorsements by the school.

As Merit Scholars Norine and Elissa are now eligible for National Merit Scholarships and grants. The amount that they receive will be determined by their past achievements, potential abilities, and financial ability.

Their respective colleges and other scholarship funds will also take their achievement into consideration. This is especially important to Norine Meister who will graduate soon. Elissa Wittman graduated at the semester and is already established in college.
