The varsity golfers will open another busy week of play this Monday. The week includes meets against Elk Grove and Palatine, as well as the District on Saturday.
The stickmen participated in the Chevy Chase Invitational golf tournament last Saturday. The Warriors joined the 15 other teams to play in the event despite extremely wet and windy weather. The results of the tournament were unable to be obtained for publication in this issue.
The preceding day, Friday, April 28, the Golf Team met the Wheeling varsity in an away meet on the same Chevy Chase course. In this meet the Warriors were humbled in a close, heart‑breaking defeat, 176 to 179.
For Maine Rick Merk came through with a sturdy round of 41, and Dave Grutzius followed with a score of 44. However, the next two Warrior scores were 47's, recorded by Ken Helfers and Jim Reed. With no spectacular scores for its team, Wheeling won the meet with scores of 42, 43, 45, and 46. These scores were shot by Sorenson, Saar, Klocke, and Selon respectively. The loss saddled West with its first Conference loss in as many matches.

On Thursday, April 27, the Maine golfers met Deerfield at the home of this Central‑Suburban rival. This time some fabulous shooting by West was nullified by the even more spectacular Deerfield scores. West's total of 174 fell far short of the 161 Deerfield total.
Merk again led the way for Maine with, a nine‑hole score of 41. Dave Krowka and Helfers compiled totals of 44, and Grutzius was right behind them with a 45. Tom Vent of the Deerfield Warriors shot an incredible 37 and was backed up by John Phillips' fine 38. Tofky scored a 42, and Schuler carded a 44 to round out the Deerfield scoring.
The varsity golfers started the busy week on Tuesday, April 25, by taking a 164‑184 thrashing from Downers Grove North.
For the Westmen two rounds of 44 were the top scores in the nine‑hole contest. Dave Krowka and Rick Merk were the owners of these scores. Dave Grutzius and Ken Helfers brought the Maine total to 184 by both shooting 48's.
