Donna Serves Student Council;
John Presides Over Tri-M

"Boys who take all the swingers out and leave all the nice girls at home are my pet peeve," declared the 5' 3", blue-eyed, blond Donna Ladendorf. This senior is an active member of Ski Club, chairman of the Student Council's Service Committee, Girls' Club treasurer, and is also president of the Luther League at her church. Last year Donna was initiated as an honorary member of the Historical Society. In her past years at Maine she has also participated in Class Council, Pep Club, and G.A.A.

Donna advises students "to especially become active in a lot of clubs in your freshman year, because it will help you become acquainted with more people."

Singing takes up a lot of Donna's time. At present she is in two folk‑singing groups. With them she has performed for the Senior‑Faculty Tea, the Senior PTC Party, and V‑Show. At St. Matthew's Home for the Aged she and her church group entertained the convalescents.

When asked what she would do to improve Maine, Donna answered, "I would let students run more things by themselves, such as honor study halls and a student lounge."

During spring vacation Donna and her friends went to Florida. "Donski" revealed, "Everything that you hear about it is true." After taking this trip she has decided that Florida is her favorite state.

Donna said that the thing she dislikes most about Maine is "the attitude of adults for the way they judge all teenagers as being bad. She added "Many teenagers have a lot to offer."

Her busy schedule includes English lVE, chemistry, government, drama, and Senior Leaders. "My favorite course is drama," stated Donna, "because it is very informal, and it gives me a chance to talk a lot."

"The best thing about Maine is the good training it offers students," decided Donna. In the fall she is planning to attend Iowa State University. Donna has been considering studying elementary education, but is still undecided.

Donna claims that her favorite foods are spaghetti and pizza and all Italian food.

"Seniors don't get enough responsibility. They should have more privileges," remarked John Balma, this week's personality. "If I could improve the school, I'd have a study lounge for just the seniors."

The six‑foot, brown‑haired, brown‑eyed senior, who plans on attending Wheaton College, is taking Chemistry IIAP, English lVE, Calculus AP, and government.

He is in National Honor Society, president of Tri‑M, played the clarinet for four years in the school band, and is in orchestra. He also participated in V‑Show this year.

When John does have spare time, he enjoys both water and snow skiing, driving around, and practicing on his folk guitar. He also sings and plays for a band.

"My pet peeves are kids who stop in the middle of the hail to talk to their friends, people who kid me about my 'bug,' and the cafeteria floor‑that kills me!"

The only thing John doesn't like about Maine West is "The teachers don't give enough credit that the students deserve." Also he wishes that there were more school assemblies.

John stated he likes "I Spy" preferably to "The Monkees," grape pop, and the song, "Windy." When asked what his favorite group was, he laughed, "my own!"

John states his most embarrassing moment occurs "every other day in government class. Mr. Freeman is my neighbor, and he keeps picking on me."

"My funniest moment is when I nearly knocked Mr. Kuite off the stage during a band rehearsal. And my worst moment is when I was auditioning for a band. I played the whole number out; and then when I finished, I realized that I played it in the wrong key. That was stupid!"

John's advice to the freshmen is "They should get involved in a lot of activities. They pass up a lot of good opportunities."

This senior, whose main ambition is to become a good skier, enjoys summer the best "because 'we're out of school, and there's no homework. Also I can go skiing, boating‑things like that." This summer, though, he plans on working for either the hospital or the telephone company.
