Diamondmen Beat Conant, Elk Grove

The diamondmen of Maine West were defeated last Monday by Evanston 4‑2 in the first Regional game which was played on the Niles East diamond. The Wildkits scored one run in the second inning and one run in the third inning to lead the Warriors 2‑1, after a run in the third inning by the Warriors. The Warriors tied up the score in the fourth inning, but the power‑hitting of Evanston scored two more runs in the fifth to make the score 4‑2.

On Wednesday, April 10, the varsity baseball team took the District championship by beating Conant 1‑0. Al Fritz gave a fine performance by striking out 10 batters without giving up any walks and allowing the Cougars only one hit.

Furio, who pitched for Conant, also did an excellent job, as he did when he pitched a 4‑2 victory over Maine earlier this year.

In the fourth inning Dick Manny led the Warriors off with a single. Bob Banger and Harry Tistle also singled to put men on first, second, and third bases respectively. Then Tom Kehe sent Manny home after a walk to first base. Because both teams put up a good defense, the score remained 1‑0 throughout the rest of the game.

The diamondmen so far this season are in first place with a 8‑1 Conference record. Forest View is in second with a 7‑1 record; Prospect is in third place with a 4‑2‑1 record; Arlington is fourth with a 5‑3 record; Conant is in fifth place with a 3‑6 record; Palatine is in sixth with a 1‑6‑1 record; and Elk Grove follows up with a 0‑8 record.

On Friday, May 12, the diamondmen beat Conant by a score of 6‑1. Harry Tistle struck out 10 batters and only gave up two walks. In the third inning Harry Tistle walked, stole second and third bases, and ran home on an overthrown ball. In the fourth inning Tom Kehe walked and stole second, and Bob Banger singled Kehe in.

The Warriors scored two more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to end the game at 6‑1. Twelve bases were stolen by the diamondmen, and six errors were committed by Conant.

In the Elk Grove game which was held Tuesday, May 9, the Warriors overwhelmed their opponents with a score of 9‑2. Here, the diamondmen stole 10 bases while the Elk Grove team committed five errors.
