Charlotte Receives Teaching Grant

Charlotte Freeman has been named the 'winner of the 1967 Teaching Scholarship awarded by the Soroptimists Club of Des Plaines. The $500 scholarship will help Char when she attends Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

The formal scholarship presentation will take place at the Soroptimists' Installation Banquet on Saturday, June 3. The banquet will be held at the Allgauer's in the Concord Motel. The scholarship will be presented by Mrs. Dorothy Mackland, chairman of the Service and Projects Committee of the woman's service organization.

When asked to comment on her award, Char said, "A friend once told me that anyone can go to college if he really wants to. I !wasn't sure about it in my case; but now that I've received this scholarship, I realize it is true. I'm so happy. This scholarship will be so much of a help to me."

Char has been active all her four years at Maine West, taking part in National Honor Society, Brotherhood Society, Pep Club, Pom‑Pon Squad (serving as captain this year), V‑Show (serving as student choreographer this year), National Thespian Society, Sigma Chi Sigma, Spirit Senate, and leader program. She has performed in two school musicals, South Pacific and Flower Drum Song.

She has taken seven accelerated courses and has made the high honor roll or the honor roll every year. She will graduate approximately 18 in a class of 630. Char was also a contestant in the recent Miss Des Plaines beauty pageant.

During her summer vacations, Char has been a children's activities instructor for the Des Plaines Park District. She has also served as a counselor at Timberlake Summer Camp. Working with these children proved to be a large factor in her decision to select teaching as a career, she stated in her application for the Soroptimists' Scholarship Award.
