Coach Eugene Zuccarini's varsity golf team staged a great comeback season this spring to go from last place to second place in the Conference standings. The golfers completed their dual‑meet play on Tuesday, May 23, with a victory over Conant High School. The win gave the Warriors a 4‑3 Conference record.
The Conant meet saw West's number‑one man, Rick Merk, again break into the 30's for nine holes. Merk carded 39 on the Yellow Course of Golden Acres Country Club, home of the Cougars. Throughout the entire season Rick has shown himself to be the very top player in the Mid‑Suburban League.
Ken Helfers, Dave Krowka, and Dave Grutzius all toured the same Yellow

Course in 43 strokes to sew up the victory. The total score was Maine West 168. Conant 174.
The West Warriors spent the first part of their schedule losing most of their non‑Conference meets. However, the stickmen got on the winning track to make the Conference season a profitable one. A one‑stroke loss to Palatine and a three stroke loss to Wheeling kept the Warriors from first‑place contention all the way.
Although half of this year's team will be lost upon graduation, Maine's varsity golf future again looks bright. West loses senior lettermen Rick Merk, Larry Coffman, and Ken Lorentz but gains three more in Dave Krowka, Ken Helfers, and Dave Grutzius.
