Maine High Schools Welcome
Dr. Short As Superintendent

"I feel that the Maine Township schools are good schools already," said Dr. Richard R. Short, newly instated superintendent of Maine Township High Schools. When asked what major improvements he intended to make, Dr. Short replied that he would like to see an increased use of educational television and that certain aspects of the academic program must be revised.

Dr. Short has come from Nebraska where he taught mathematics, coached football and basketball, and was a principal and superintendent. He is married and has two children, ages three and eight. The little spare time this educator finds is devoted to his family. Dr. Short also enjoys golf, athletics, and bridge.

Dr. Short received all three of his degrees from the University of Nebraska. Besides traveling in the eastern states of the country, Dr. Short has spent one month in the Soviet Union, studying the school system there.

"Young people ought to consider a teaching profession because there is really nothing more rewarding," the doctor commented. He added that an increasing number of young people will have to be met with an increase in the number of teachers and courses offered.

On the question of Maine West expecting a fieldhouse in the near future, Dr. Short had this to say: "The first three months that I've been here I've been engaged in trying to study the current and projected needs of facilities so that suggestions can be made to the school board.

"We expect to have complete and comparable facilities in each of the high schools in the township." This does not, however, mean identical equipment.

Dr. Short's pet peeve is that "Many people tend to judge young people by the two or three per cent that make the headlines." He further commented that the sampling of youth he has so far been able to see appears extremely capable and promising.
