Intramural Reports

The Senior touch football tournament ended Thursday, October 6, with Coach Ray Kearns' ninth period gym class winning the coveted title. Coach Kearns' Kornhuskers streaked to victory on the strength of a blocked extra point by hard‑hitting linemen which enabled them to grab a one point, 14‑13, victory and save the game from a sudden‑death playoff. Members of the All‑Intramural winning team were Mike Mencinger, Captain Jim Hren, Bob Hoim, Tom Christiansen, "Hulk" Bally, Owen Whittman, Harv Kahler, Ed Pluemer, and Dick Schellin.

The penalty‑ridden thriller opened with the thud of Jim Hren's foot hitting the pigskin. Coach George Jorndt's seventh period class was the first to score against the huge defensive line of the Kornhuskers. But Coach Kearns' Kornhuskers came roaring back with a touchdown pass to center Dick Schellin. The point after was made good by Jim Hren. The remainder of the game turned into a see‑saw battle of the defenses with each team being able to score only once more. The Kornhuskers pounded the middle of Mr. Jorndt's line and picked up valuable yardage around the ends with their powerful end sweeps. Coach Jorndt's team was able to connect on a few passes that eluded the Kornhuskers' secondary to score in the final minutes of play. Their try for the extra point was blocked by one of Mr. Kearns' big linemen to win the game for the Kornhuskers.
