Warrior of the West

"Wild parties and most girls" is the pet peeve of this 'week's Warrior of the West Eddie Lusk. Eddie has brown hair and blue eyes, stands 5' 10 1/2" tall, and weighs 145 pounds and has been running on the varsity cross country and track teams since his sophomore year.

Eddie is in his fourth year of cross country and will be in his third year of track this season. Eddie has already earned his third letter in cross country this year and has earned two from track.

"Have confidence in the team, coach, and yourself" is what this Warrior advises anyone going out for a sport. This is one of the reasons that Eddie has been a consistent runner for Maine West.

"The 1966 District Track Meet would have to be my best meet because it made me eligible for the State Meet," Eddie stated. Eddie placed fifth in the half-mile run in the District Meet behind four seniors. This year Eddie will be aiming for first in the District half‑mile run and also will try for one of the top places in the State Meet,

Whistle sprints and the stadium steps are the hardest parts of training according to Eddie. Eddie would like to attend either DePaul or Carthage on a scholarship. Eddie has already received an offer to run for DePaul.

"Cross country is my favorite sport because there is more team effort than in track," Eddie stated. Eddie believes that the many opportunities it offers is the most outstanding thing about Maine.

What is Eddie looking forward to in the future? "I would like to have the cross country team win Conference and District and place in the top five in State and would like to go downstate twice this year."

Eddie believes that school spirit could be improved if the athletes in the different sports would not have so much rivalry between them because they are all working for the same cause.

A funny experience that happened to Eddie in cross country was that he ran his whole freshman year without a cross country uniform. If there were one thing Eddie would change about himself, it would be to be able to hold a better conversation with people.

"This is the year I have been 'waiting for" is what Eddie replied when asked what he thought the team would do this year. The past two years Eddie has finished seventh in the cross country Conference meets and is definitely planning to finish in the top three.

Besides being one of the top runners on both the cross country and track teams, Eddie is also president of M‑Club this year. Making use of study halls is how Eddie keeps up with his studies.
