An innovation in the drama department this year will be the all school play sponsored by the Thespian Society. The Glass Menagerie has been selected as the play to run December 8, 9, and 10 in the Maine West auditorium.
According to Mr. Garth Boyer, director of the play, The Glass Menagerie, is one of the great dramas of American contemporary theater. The play is considered to be very hard to perform. This is due mainly to the fact that there are only four characters in the play and also that much of the mood is created by the lighting.
The play is based on a poor family of three, Amanda Wingfield, her daughter Laura, and her son Tom. Conflict develops as Amanda pushes Tom into an alcoholic state and antagonizes Laura to find a husband. Joy is brought into the life of crippled Laura, however, when Tom brings a friend of his home to dinner.
Tryouts for the play will be held October 31 through November 2. Although there are only four parts, Mr. Boyer expects about 70 students to try out. He also

commented, "Anyone is able to try out for a part because this will be an all school play-the first Maine West has ever had."
Thespian Society, the sponsor of the play, is a nationwide honorary society for students who enjoy acting and working behind the scenes. This is the first time that the Thespian Society has ever sponsored a play at Maine West. Arlette Dawson '67, president of the society, commented, "Since it is my favorite play, I am thrilled that Maine West can produce it. It is a fabulous play."
Arlette also pointed out that even though there are only four parts in the play, more students are needed for the scenery work. If any students are interested in working on set construction, they are advised to see Mr. Robert Norris.
The Glass Menagerie is a Pulitzer Prize‑winning play written by Tennessee Williams, an American playwright.
All students are now given a chance to participate in a play while at school.
