Warrior of the West

"Being All‑Conference just has to be my most exciting experience," related Craig Rowells, this issue's Warrior of the West.

This 6' 1", blue‑eyed, brown-haired senior has lettered twice in both football and baseball. Craig has gone out for each sport for four years. One thing that participation in sports has taught Craig is "respect for others." He is the center and linebacker on the football team and a catcher on the baseball team. Craig also plans to participate in basketball this year and hopes the team will do better.

Craig stated, "The Peoria football game was outstanding, and I was very lucky to have intercepted a pass that set up a touchdown." He does think that the team should have done better against Maine South, but he feels that the team has had a good season and hopes that upcoming teams will do a well.

Advice given by Craig to newcomers in a sport is "Get tough and give it all you have." He enjoys football because of the contact and because there is no penalty for getting mad. He feels the hardest part of training is getting in shape. "These coaches really make you work, but they're the greatest," remarked Craig.

After practice Craig really hits the books, although he wishes that he could improve his grades. After high school Craig would like to play football at West Point or Iowa University. He would like to attend school on a scholarship; but he said, "I get hurt pretty often. I hope I can make it."

When asked how Maine's spirit could be improved, Craig stated, "It can't, but I feel the students should get out and support the minor sports." He said there is the same amount of participation and hard work in all sports. Craig's pet peeve concerns boys who participate in a sport for a short time and then quit.

Craig's favorite food is meat, preferably steak and pork. The only problem is Craig doesn't have much time for eating, television, or pleasures because of practice and studies.

During the summer and what little free time he can find, Craig likes to caddy and just "mess around with the boys."
