Director Chooses Cast

The cast of Maine West's first all school play consists of: Cheryl Bard '67 as Amanda, Elizabeth Grange '67 as Laura, Bill Nagel '67 as Tom, and Doug Bergman '67 as Jim. The responsibility of being student directors was given to Phyllis Van Kranenburgh '67 and Judy Johnson '67. The play will be presented December 8, 9, and 10 in the Maine West auditorium.

The Glass Menagerie is a contemporary American drama by Tennessee Williams. It is about a poor family: Amanda Wingfield, the mother; Laura, her crippled daughter; and Tom, her son. None of them can face the world of reality so they have all retreated to a world of illusion and fantasy. Amanda lives within her memories of her youth as a Southern belle: Laura retreats to the make‑believe world of her glass menagerie; and Tom retreats to the world of illusion caused by alcohol. Reality comes into their lives when Tom brings his friend Jim home to dinner.

Mr. Robert Norris of the English department is in charge of set construction for The Glass Menagerie. He has revealed that the sets should prove to be one of the innovations of the production. The usual "box" set will not be used. Instead, a stylized set will be constructed. This type of set is more open than the box set because walls are only suggested. This will be combined with the fact that much of the mood of the play will be created by lighting effects.

This is the first time that Thespian Society has ever sponsored a play at Maine West. Mr. Garth Boyer, director of The Glass Menagerie and sponsor of Thespian Society, explained, "This production is not a money‑making project for Thespians."

Tickets for all three performances will be sold in the bookstore starting Monday, November 21, for $1. No seats will be reserved. Ticket sales for the play are being supervised by Curt Hayward '67.
