Debate Team Begins Season

The newly organized Maine West debate team began its season last week with two non-Conference meets against Maine South and Maine East. After being defeated on the first day, our teams won three out of four two days later. Mr. Merel Marine, debate coach, commented, "We were forced to borrow students from Maine South because of the apparent lack of interest among our students; and even with this handicap, we managed to win."

The first tournament debate was held Saturday at Niles West, and Maine West succeeded in winning four out of eight. The negative team of Craig Dudczyk '69 and Karen Gatsis '70 won three out of four

- losing only to New Trier East, while the affirmative team of John Chips '69 and Mark Millonnas '70 defeated Arlington, but lost three close decisions.

Maine West had no debate team last year; and though the team this year is inexperienced and "sub‑varsity," Mr. Marine feels that it is doing exceptionally well. He added, however, "Anyone interested in debating may get in touch with me in B‑203."

The subject of this year's debate is whether foreign aid of the United States should be limited to non‑military assistance.
