Student Council Sponsors Annual
Tuberculosis Drive

The Student Council will stage its annual Tuberculosis Drive this year beginning November 28 and concluding December 2. The proceeds from the drive will be used for tuberculosis skin tests, x‑rays, care of patients, education, and research into the causes and possible cures of tuberculosis.

Last year Maine West collected $749.25, which was $249.25 over the Council's goal of $500. The preceding year's drive netted $445.54, and 1963's drive brought $259.87. These figures show two things: first, Maine has nearly doubled the amount collected for the T.B. Drive yearly; and second, the students at Maine West are taking a growing interest in problems of other people.

Interest in the drive will also be stimulated by featuring class competition. Charts of each class's level of contributions will be posted in the cafeteria.

Contributions may also give their donations to their Student Council representative in homeroom. An emblem will be given to everyone who donates to the Tuberculosis Drive.

Sheila Quinn is this year's school chairman of the campaign which is sponsored yearly by the Tuberculosis Institute of Chicago and Cook County. Arousing the students' interest will be the purpose of the publicity committee. The committee for contribution and collection will handle the gathering of donations.

The Tuberculosis Institute of Chicago and Cook County keeps in constant communication with the Chicago area and suburban communities throughout the year. This is done to promote an understanding of tuberculosis and its dangers and to encourage an understanding of what is needed to combat T.B. The Institute also hopes to enlist the aid of the general public in its attack upon tuberculosis.

The Tuberculosis Institute works in conjunction with the National Tuberculosis Association. The purpose of the National Tuberculosis Association is to stimulate study for the prevention of T.B. and other respiratory ailments. It also serves as a clearing‑house center providing information concerning T.B. The National Tuberculosis Institute receives its funds through the Christmas Seal program.

The Christmas Seal program in Chicago is usually very successful. It is hoped that more than $1,000,000 will be raised as a result of this year's program in the Chicago area. Ninety‑three percent of the Christmas seal funds will remain in the Chicagoland area to support the local fight against T.B. The remaining seven percent will be sent to the National Tuberculosis Association to finance its research projects.
