Warriors Defeat Wheeling Wildcats

Coach Ken Olson's varsity football team earned a hard-fought victory over the Wildcats of Wheeling last Saturday before a frozen crowd in Maine West Stadium. Wheeling fumbles and poor punts kept the Warriors in good field position throughout the 15 to 7 win which gave the Warriors a share of the Mid‑Suburban Conference crown with Arlington. The Warriors had to post a win in this contest as Arlington had already ended their season the week before with one more victory than the Warriors.

October 29 saw the Warriors steamroll Conant 48 to 0 with the Warriors piling up 35 points in the third quarter. Conant centralized their defense on stopping the Warrior ground attack, and this left them extremely vulnerable to the Warrior air game that began rolling just as the second period started. Warrior quarterback Bob Banger found Tom Pyron all alone behind the Cougar secondary and connected on a 67‑yard pass play for Maine's first score. Later in the period, touchdown passes were thrown to Ken Werner and Al Fritz, both of whom were wide open.

Against the Wildcats the Warriors received but were held by the tough Wheeling line. This began a series of four consecutive Wheeling fumbles, and the Warriors capitalized on the second miscue. Bruce Kaechele recovered the ball for the Warriors, and two plays later Bob Banger carried a Wheeling defender over the goal line with him as the Warriors posted a 6 to 0 lead.

Late in the first period the Warriors fielded a poor Wheeling punt on the 30‑yard line and brought it down to the 12 where Andy Sanchez kicked his first field goal of the year. The half ended with Maine ahead 9 to 0.

Hard runs by Wildcat backs Bastable, Hittman, and Devitto produced a 70‑yard drive and a score for the Wildcats just as the third quarter began; and the kick by Lemke was good to cut the Warrior margin to 2 points.

As the last period began, the Warriors had driven to the 12‑yard line of Wheeling but were forced to give up the ball.
