The 1966 Maine West harriers finished a great season on Saturday, November 5, with a sterling seventh place finish in the state finals. This is the best placing a Warrior cross country team has ever made, and the team performed outstandingly throughout the entire season.
Saturday, October 29, is the day the runners qualified to go downstate, as they placed second in the Maine West District. Overwhelming all opponents was Evanston, which placed runners in slots. 1, 4, 7, 14, and 20. The Warriors took places 2, 6, 9, 27, and 34 in the race run by 175 boys. The top totals were: 1) Evanston 46; 2) Maine West 78; 3) Arlington 84.
Twenty-six schools grouped at Urbana Country Club for the final contest on Saturday, November 5. Evanston proved to be the state's supreme power as they prevailed by a narrow margin. At last Maine's finest, Lee LaBadie, met his peers as he finished fourth in the field of about 200. Despite Lee's fine effort, three other runners were able to edge him in the last half of the race. Previous to the action in the state finals, the harriers concluded their dual meet schedule. In an away meet the Warriors conquered Crystal Lake by a score of 17‑40 on October 24. The Warriors traveled to Niles North on Tuesday, November 1, where they dismantled the Vikings 21 to 40. The final dual meet record of the harriers was 9‑1.
