Student Council Conference Convenes

The Fourteenth Annual Chicago Area Intergroup Relations Conference was held November 11 at Thornton High School.

More than 3,000 students attended the conference which lasted from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Maine West was represented by several members of the Student Council.

The purpose of the conference was to promote better understanding between teenagers of various ethnic groups. The agenda for the day consisted of two discussion groups, luncheon, a play, and a speech.

"The Continuing Revolution" was the title of the speech given by Dr. William Cole, president of Lake Forest College. The speech dealt with the history of the Negro and his yet unended struggle for freedom.

The discussion groups were the most popular aspect of the convention. Sukru Gurel '67, Maine's AFS student, commented, "To me, it was most interesting to hear about problems from the Negro point of view."

Cheri Schueler '68 was amazed by the candid opinions expressed in the discussion groups.

The common feelings of the West delegates were summed up by Joe Sanchez '69, who exclaimed, "I'm glad I went, and I think they should have these things more often!"

The play presented was "What Are You Afraid Of?" It was written and directed by Father Barry O.F.M.
