Maine West's Music Department held their annual solo and ensemble festival November 16, at 4 p.m. in room R‑207. Mrs. Mildred Heidorn, director of the Concert and Junior Orchestras, planned the festival program.
This year's festival featured 15 solos, four duets, five quartets, three quintets, and a cello choir. Students who participated were from the Concert and Junior Orchestras.
Mr. Walter S. Wolodkin, director of the Maine East High School orchestra, presided as judge for the many musical arrangements. Entries were divided into two classes: Group I ‑ advanced students, group II beginning intermediate students.
Three of the superior‑rated ensembles were the solos by Mark Nichols '67 accompanied by Sue Chamberlin '70; Janet Pendergrass '69, accompanied by Mark Nichols '67; and Janet Haarvig '70, accompanied by Curt Hayward '69.
Others were the quartet consisting of Janet Pendergrass '69, Peg Heller '68, Marilyn Phillips '68, and Janet Haarvig '70; and the quintet with members Mark Nichols '67, Mike Cheever '70, Steve Pintuck '70, Jim Janssens '69, and Bill Johnson '69.

One of the most unusual ensembles was the cello choir. Sue Wright '67, Janet Haarvig '70, Sherry Henderson '68, Sue Gray '67, Jim Janssens '69, Charmaine Henderson '69, Larry Kuznicki '70, Leon Groves '69, Cindy Post '70, Diane Kempke '70, accompanying, were featured in this group.
Another superior‑rated cello solo was performed by Janet Haarvig '70 accompanied by Curt Hayward '67. Also rated highly was the violin solo by Janet Pendergrass '69 accompanied by Mark Nichols '67.
These most outstanding students will have the opportunity to perform over WMTH, Maine Township's radio station.
Five students from Concert Orchestra were accepted for the IMEA District All State Festival to be held in Downers Grove. Janet Pendergrass '69, violin; Peg Heller '69, violin; Janet Haarvig '70, cello; Nancy Schupp '69, bass; and Curt Hayward '67, bass, were selected for this festival.
The Concert Orchestra is planning their Christmas Concert to be held on December 16. Some of the selections to be played are Schubert's "Overture in D Major" and Tschaikowsky's "Swan Lake." Others will be "Lohengrin" by Wagner‑Tobani, "A Dream of Christmas" by Keteberg, and "Wreath of Carols" by Matesky. The cello choir will also present "O Holy Night" and "Mister Santa."
