Cagers To Do Battle With Forest View

The rejuvenated cagers of West will throw a 2‑2 record at Forest View tonight as the Falcons host the Warriors in their second Conference game of the season. Since the season opened three weeks ago, the bucketmen have shown that they are far superior to last year's team in the ability to win; and they are giving trouble to teams with superior height.

Last Friday in the Conference opener, the Westmen lost a thrilling game to Prospect, 58 to 55. The Warriors played a fine first half, and they trailed by 4 points at half‑time. Al Fritz and Bob Banger rebounded incredibly well against the taller Knights, Kingman and Lunsted. However, the third quarter saw the Knights open up an 11 point lead at one time, and only sheer determination brought the Warriors close again. With about three minutes remaining in the game, starting forward Harry Tistle fouled out; and Maine fell three points short.

Niles West was conquered by Maine West on Saturday, November 26. Al Fritz led the way to the 60‑52 victory with great rebounding and shooting. The first quarter was played fairly evenly with the Warriors taking a 2‑point lead. Niles exploded for 25 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 37‑28 half‑time lead. Able to cut the deficit by only 1 point in the third quarter, the Warriors made a tremendous drive in the last quarter when they scored 20 points and held Niles West to 4 points. This game also saw the Warriors prove that they could out‑rebound a taller opponent.

The traditional ball game with Waukegan took place on Wednesday, November 23. Played at Waukegan, the game saw the Bulldogs dominate every phase of the game; and the Warriors found themselves on the short end of a 56‑39 score. Waukegan's five were about four inches per man taller than the Westmen. The Bulldogs led throughout the entire game, and the Warriors outscored them only in the final period.

Barrington provided the season's initial competition for West at the Maine East field house on Friday, November 18. Leading all the way from the opening basket were the Warriors, who triumphed 48 to 37. Superior ball handling and consistent shooting helped Maine overcome the usual height disadvantage. Harry Tistle led the scoring with 15 points.

The junior varsity netmen have gotten off to their greatest start ever, winning three games in three tries. The juniors upset Waukegan at home on November 19 by a score of 40 to 30. Niles West's Indians fell to the JVs 41 to 38 on November 26 at Niles. The JV team was also untouchable on December 2, as they walloped Prospect at home, 58 to 46. Guard Ted Waskowski played an outstanding game while leading the Warrior attack with 19 points.
