Steve Lilja To Perform In Parade

Fame and recognition again come to Maine West. Steve Lilja '67 has been chosen in a contest sponsored by the Independent Order of Foresters to play in the Robin Hood Band which will be marching in the Tournament of Roses Parade. He will be in California from December 26 to January 2.

The Independent Order of Foresters is one of the world's largest fraternal benefit organizations. This band, in which Steve will play baritone horn, is made up of young people, ages 14 to 21 from all over the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Steve was very enthusiastic about being chosen. He said, "This is really a series of firsts for me. It's not only the first guest performance I've, ever given, but this will be the first time I've flown and my first trip to California.

"It all started when Mr. Robert Kuite received an application and literature about the contest and asked me if I were interested. I signed the application and it was sent in. Later, I was called to audition. A tape of my audition was sent to California, and now I'm going to play in the Rose Bowl Parade.

"It seems like a great opportunity. The organization is providing transportation, living accommodations, uniforms for the parade, and a trip to Disneyland. It's not all going to be fun, though; they say we have to practice every day from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m."

Steve is a member of the Maine West Concert Band, Show Band, and is music director of this year's V‑Show.
