Swim Team Wins First Two Meets

The varsity swim team has won the first two meets of this season by defeating both New Trier West and Arlington. The Maine tankers also distinguished themselves by setting two school records. Grant Wenzel '67 set the first one while swimming the 50‑yard free style against New Trier West. The second record set was the 400‑yard free style relay made by Marc Bonnivier '67, Chris Olander '69, Dan Brinkman '68, and Grant Wenzel '67 while swimming against Arlington.

Although the tankers won only four out of 11 events, they were still able to slither past New Trier to a 48‑46 victory. This is due mainly to the fact that Maine shut out New Trier in the 200‑yard medley relay by a score of 7‑0 and repeated the same feat in the 400‑yard free style relay, also by a score of 7‑0. Maine was defeated in the 200‑yard free style, 200‑yard individual medley, 100‑yard fly, 100‑yard free style, the 400‑yard free style, and the 100‑yard breast stroke. Maine scored higher than New Trier in the 50‑yard free style, in which Grant Wenzel '67 set a school record, and the 100‑yard back stroke. Maine acquired the remaining 18 points in the seven events in which it was outscored by New Trier West.

Arlington was completely pulverized by Maine's swimmers who scored 73 points to Arlington's 22. The tankers won all events except the 100‑yard breast stroke.

Dan Brinkman '68 swam to first in the 200‑yard free style followed closely by Larry Harrison '67. First place in the 50‑yard free style was Grant Wenzel '67; first in the 200‑yard individual medley was Chris Olander '69; and first in diving was Mike Teegen '68.

First place positions were also won by Jim Greenwald '68 in the 100‑yard free style, Norm Hudson '67 in the 100‑yard back stroke, Larry Harrison '67 in the 400‑yard free style, and Paul Anderson '68, who took first in the 100‑yard butterfly.

Maine also won both the 200‑yard medley relay and the 400‑yard free style relay.
