Next Tuesday night the Warrior Basketball team will begin competition in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament with a contest against the host team of Proviso West. The game will be the last contest on the first day of double‑elimination action as the Warriors take to the floor at 9:30 p.m.
Coach Gaston Freeman's teams have always done exceptionally well in this tourney, piling up two seconds and one third place. Maine also holds the record for the least fouls in the tournament while former Warrior stars Joe Wehlacz and Jim Smith have marks for most points scored and rebounds collected.
Some of the top teams this year should be the Pirates of Proviso West, Rich Central, Elgin, Riverside‑Brookfield, and East Leyden.
If the Warriors should beat Proviso West the first night, they will play the winner of the Morton East‑Downers Grove North encounter. Being successful again the Warriors would continue playing until beaten. If the Warriors are not victorious against Proviso, then they would move into the consolation side of the double elimination tournament in which the losers of the first games compete for the consolation championship.

General admission for the tournament is $1 for adults and $.50 for children under 12. Proviso West is located just off the Eisenhower Expressway adjacent to the Hillside Shopping Center.
On December 9 the Westmen played their second Mid Suburban game and lost a close, tense match to the Falcons of Forest View, 59 to 56. The Warriors nearly pulled the game out in the last few seconds when they had the ball out of bounds underneath their own basket with Forest View holding a 1‑point lead. The Warriors attempted to move the ball in to Al Fritz for a drive to the basket but could not and were forced to take an outside shot that ran around the rim and out. Falcon Ted Lambert then grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made a one and one situation from the free‑throw line to ice the game for Forest View.
Maine pressed throughout the contest, and the Forest View five tried to counter this with a furious fast break led by guards Buck Jones and Frank Cavello. In the third quarter the Warriors utilized their press to force Falcon turnovers and slice the Forest View lead that had found its way to 8 points.
Warrior‑scoring efforts were led by Al Fritz who made seven of nine shots from the field and a total of 17 points. Phil Murdock added 11 on drives and long shots from outside the Forest View zone defense, while Dick Manny plugged 9 on three baskets and three free throws.
