"Teachers who have pets is my pet peeve," asserted Dhyan Fehrenbacher, president of the AFS organization. Dhyan is 6' 6" tall standing on a stool; otherwise, she is 5' 4". She has blonde hair and green eyes. Dhyan admits that "crowded B-wing halls" is another of her pet peeves.
Two of her hobbies are skiing and a "certain boy who is president of M‑Club." Although she has only gone skiing two times, she has received new equipment and plans to ski a lot in the future.
"DH," as she is called by her friends, feels that the most important thing to do while at Maine is to "learn something and make plans for the future." Her advice to students is to "be prepared for after high school."
Being the president of the AFS organization, vice‑president of the Tri‑Hi‑Y Girls' Club at the YMCA, and being involved in the Ski Club takes up much of Dhyan's time. "Sukru Gurel from Turkey is our present AFS student. We hope to send someone abroad next year and get a foreign exchange student in return: but unless the students get enthused about being a host family, this will be impossible.
"To arouse student interest, we are planning the AFS Week for March. This includes a carnival, an ice cream social, and a taffy apple sale."
When asked what the Tri‑Hi‑Y Club does, Dhyan said, "We operate as a service organization, and we do things for orphanages and for the community. We sponsor dances for our own' enjoyment."
This busy senior thinks, "The facilities at Maine are just great, and the students in all classes are so friendly." The science department is her favorite because there are so many different things to do.
"Oh, brother" was Dyhan's comment when she was asked about her funniest moment. "Once, I was driving; and whenever I turned the wheel, the car horn would stick. It was really funny when I drove around the Cumberland Circle."
Dhyan's courses include English lVE, Biology IIAP, college algebra, law, and government. "Biology is my favorite course because it is operated like a college class," she commented.
Plans for the future include attending Northern University to study biology. Dhyan hopes to work this summer at the Abbey, a resort on Lake Geneva, and someday hopes to travel with one of her friends to Nassau in the Bahamas.

The 5' 5", blue‑eyed blonde "mother hen" of 5A C‑111 study hall is Jay Carley. This senior is an active member of M‑Club and Brotherhood Society, and last year was president of Brotherhood Society. He is also on the gymnastics team and has been active in Student Council and Class Council. Jay commented that his hardest moment at Maine occurred last year. "I had to give a speech for the Brotherhood assembly, and," admitted Jay, "I hate giving speeches."
Jay remarked that his pet peeve is "people who walk on the wrong side of the hall." He said that the new fire doors are a big improvement and have helped the situation of crowded corridors a lot.
Jay thinks that school is great.
"I guess we rate pretty high. The best thing about Maine is the teachers and coaches. Maine West has some of the finest coaches around."
If he could change anything at all about Maine, Jay said it would be the food in the cafeteria. "The spaghetti is good, but that's about it," protested Jay.
Jay has a full schedule this year, including English IVW, conservation, government, trigonometry, and auto shop. "My favorite subject is trig because it is so much fun."
"I experienced my most embarrassing moment," smiled Jay, "last summer driving home after a weekend in Wisconsin. I got a ticket for speeding. Because it was after curfew, I had to call my boyfriend to pick me up because I had the family car."
Jay hails from Antigo, Wisconsin, which he claims is his favorite city.
Jay enjoys spending his summers at the Indiana sand dunes, which he thinks are fabulous. The past two summers he has worked at a drive-in. "Working there was great," declared Jay, "because it gave me an opportunity to see so many of the kids from school." Jay is now working at a chain store.
