Beginning Debaters Demonstrate Skill

The Maine West debate team recently returned from Carbondale, Illinois, where they ran up a score of six wins and four losses against Southern Illinois University. Mr. Merel Marine, sponsor of the debate team commented, "That is an excellent record for a beginning debate team."

"For the amount of people on the team, says Mr. Marine, "They're doing a great job. We could use more debaters." If there were more debaters, they would not have to participate in every debate.

The positive team for the Carbondale meet was Kathy Wilken '70, and Mark Millonas '70. Craig Dudezak '69 and Karen Gatsis '70 were on the negative team.

Mr. Marine stated, "We're welcoming new members, especially freshmen, sophomores, and juniors."

The debate team took on Oak Park‑River Forest High School on January 14. The result of that meet was four wins and four losses.

Other members of the debate team are John Chips '69, and Jan Zabinski '70, who were debating January 14, and Janice Thain '69 and Kathy Seipp '69 who will debate January 21, at Wheeling.

Thus far, the debate team has beaten Highland Park, Riverside‑Brookfield, the University High School of South Harrisburg, Downers Grove South, and Matton. They have lost to New Trier East, Springfield, Granite City, and North Chicago.

The subject for the debates is always the same. It is "Resolved: That the foreign aid program of the United States should be limited to non‑military assistance." This enables the debate team members to acquire information over the entire year and to become more acquainted with their subject.
