Bucketmen Earn Conference Win

The Warrior basketball team will try this weekend to improve on its 1‑3 Conference record as they meet Conant tonight at home and Wheeling away on Saturday night. Conant currently sports an 0‑4 Mid‑Suburban record, while the improved Wheeling team has a 2‑2 mark. Saturday night's contest will mark the end of the first half of the Conference season, and so far Arlington is the league‑leading team.

A victory over Palatine on last Friday earned for the Westmen their first Conference triumph of the season. After losing all three of their previous Conference titles by 3 points, the bucketmen turned the tables on the Pirates with a thrilling 44‑41 victory. The close battle saw Palatine sneak ahead 25‑24 at halftime, only to yield the lead for the entire second half. However, the Warriors were not assured of a win until the final 3 seconds when Dick Manny put in two free throws. Al Fritz led all scorers with 13 points, and he now ranks third among the league's leading scorers.

Morton West played host to the varsity cagers last Saturday night. The non‑Conference duel was highlighted by another exciting finish, typical of all the varsity's games this year. The final score was 59 to 53 in Morton's favor. Trailing by 6 points at the end of the third period, the Maine bucketeers tied the game at the end of regulation time with a 23‑point fourth‑quarter splurge. Again, however, the Warriors could not sustain their drive in the overtime period; and the Falcons outlasted them by 6 points. Harry Tistle shot in 16 points for Maine West; Phil Murdock contributed 14 points. Terry Alexa led the Morton West cagers with 19 points.
