Warrior of the West

A Warrior who is really in the swim is Grant Wenzel, this week's Warrior of the West. He stands 5' 7" tall, and his eyes and hair are dark brown.

Grant began swimming at the age of 10 and as of now has accumulated two varsity letters. "Start early and stick with it" is his advice to boys planning to go out for swimming. According to Grant, the hardest part of training, as in any sport, is "getting back into shape."

Grant's most memorable meet took place in his sophomore year. By a stroke of luck he obtained a good lead which led to an easy victory.

Grant predicts that this year's tankers will do much better than last year's. "That is," he added, "if we don't goof off too much Tom, as he is also called, feels that through participation in sports he has learned "the importance of individual effort in improving oneself, both physically and mentally."

Grant declares that the best thing about Maine West is the janitors, "because they do such a fine job of keeping our school clean, especially the cafeteria." Grant advocates the holding of more stag dances as a method of improving school spirit.

Grant hopes to attend either Oklahoma University or Southern Illinois University on a scholarship program. After college Grant has tentative plans to become a coach or a physical education teacher.

Although much time must be devoted to practice, Grant finds it fairly easy to keep up with his schoolwork.

In his free time Grant enjoys snow‑skiing, except, as he laments, "We are restricted from skiing during the swimming season."

"The many athletes who break training ‑ not to mention any names!" is Grant's pet peeve.

Grant has been nicknamed "GT" by his friends, as a compromise between Grant and Tom.

Grant's favorite foods are steak and lobster.
