Mainite Bakes Way To Possible Grant

Vicki D. Powell '67 may find the best way to a college scholarship to be via a cherry pie. Vicki entered the eighth annual Penny Flame Cherry Pie Contest at Maine West, and her victory enabled her to compete in the regional bake‑off in Glenview on Saturday, February 4. From there she and three other girls, two senior high students and two from junior high, may go on to Aurora for the final bake‑off at the headquarters of the Illinois Gas Company.

The contest, sponsored by the Northern Illinois Gas Company, offers a $1,000 scholarship to the first place winner and $300 for second place.

The girls were not only judged on the pies they baked but also on such things as poise, general grooming, personality, creativity, and originality.

Among the judges were Mr. Herman Rider, principal; Mrs. Gloria Saul, cafeteria manager; and Mrs. Lucille Stiles, chairman of the Home Economics department, from Maine West.

The Penny Flame Cherry Pie Contest was open to all high school girls taking home economics in this area of northern Illinois. Nine girls from Maine West entered. Jill Schlanbusch '67 was runner‑up.
