Warriors Soundly Defeat
Closest Rivals Last Week

Maine West's basketball Warriors will try for two more victories this weekend after having beaten two of their closest rivals last week. Arlington's league‑leading Cardinals will invade the Maine East field house tonight, and the Palatine Pirates will do likewise tomorrow night.

The last two outings for the Westmen proved to be two of their most successful of the year. The Warriors conquered Forest View on Saturday afternoon and Maine South on the preceding night for a pair of very satisfying wins.

The Forest View game was a defensive battle from the start. The Falcons were the weaker team in the game's early stages as West led 5 to 1 at the end of one quarter. However, the score was nearly even as Forest View took a 14‑13 halftime lead.

The Warriors fell behind by as many as 5 points in the last period, but they proved that pressure couldn't hurt them as they fought back into the lead. Whereas Maine committed more fouls in the first half, the Falcons fouled much more in the second half and eventually lost two starting

players on fouls. A string of free throws in the game's final minute pulled out the 31-29 victory for the Warriors. Dick Manny led all scorers with 8 points; Ken Mach, Al Fritz, and Bruce Kaechele shared the rebounding load well.

Maine West convincingly avenged an earlier loss to Maine South on last Friday night by a score of 44 to 34. The Hawks had trouble getting started, and the red‑hot West cagers charged ahead by pouring in basket after basket. The Warriors streaked to a 24‑7 halftime lead; the South bucketmen scored only 2 points in the second quarter, proof of the superb Maine West defense.

Improvement on the Hawks' part closed the gap between the two teams slightly in the third quarter. The Warriors were not to be overtaken; however; and they held stubbornly to their lead. South outscored West in the fourth quarter, also, but fell 10 points short to the delight of the Warrior home crowd.
