American Legion Sponsors Contest

"The basic purpose of the American Legion Constitution Contest is to encourage a more serious study of the great document upon which our representative government was successfully founded 180 years ago," stated Mr. Harlan Suffield, committee chairman.

"This will be the thirty‑first annual American Legion Constitution Contest in high school."

Any interested student from Maine West who wishes to participate in the contest should sign up with his social science teacher. Any student who is not taking a course in social science, but who wishes to enter the contest, may sign up with Mr. Suffield in C‑217.

All applications must be in by Monday, April 10. The objective test covering the United States Constitution will be given on Tuesday, April 11, in A‑201 at 3:45 p.m. "The objective test is given by the Maine West Social Science Department," Mr. Suffield stated.

An oral examination will be held for the seven highest scores on the objective test on April 20 at 7:30 p.m. The test will be given in the library conference room. The student's interpretation and understanding of the Constitution will be covered in the oral exam. Each exam will last about 10 minutes. Copies of questions used in previous examinations will be placed on reserve in the library. This way all students will have an equal chance to prepare for the test.

The Legion members will neither know nor consider the grades or ranks on the previous examination unless a tie should result. "The winner will receive a $200 scholarship and have his or her name inscribed on the American Legion Constitution Contest plaque, located in the Maine West library, as the outstanding student of the Constitution," remarked Mr. Suffield.
