NHS To Declare New Members

During the first week of March teachers at Maine West will announce the newly elected members of the National Honor Society.

This organization was formed by the National Association of Secondary School Teachers meeting in Chicago in 1919. "The National Honor Society through the years has been a means of recognizing students who are outstanding not only in scholarship but also in school leadership and service," stated Miss Ann Lauterbach, sponsor.

All juniors and seniors are eligible for the honors though their requirements differ. A junior must be in the upper five per cent of his class and must have received no grade lower than a B in a solid credit course. Senior requisites are less rigid; seniors must be in the upper 25 per cent of the class and have achieved a B average in the first seven semesters. Both juniors and seniors must have taken no less than four solid credit courses every year.

After the first semester of each year the entire faculty vote on those who fulfill these requirements and show good character, service to the school, and a sense of leadership.
