Math Dept. Hopes MW Places High

On Thursday, March 9, Maine West's mathematically‑minded students will report to R‑104 to participate in the 1967 Annual High School Math Examination. The test, which is a national contest, is held in the United States and Canada to encourage study in math and to give recognition to outstanding math students. Two years ago Mike Amling '65 won the state championship. Mr. David Henry, who is in charge of the contest here this year, hopes to see another Maine student repeat Mike's performance.

The examination will be held first and second periods and will be on secondary school mathematics. The questions, which will be multiple choice, will be mainly on algebra and geometry. Preliminary tests were held in the regular classrooms February 21, but students will be excused from their first two classes for the final.

The papers will be graded by the Maine West Math Department, and the highest three will be sent to the Mathematical Association of America, one of the contest's sponsors. These three papers will make up the school's team score.

Twenty awards will be presented. First prize and a silver cup will go to the school with the best team score. A bronze cup will be awarded to the teams with the best regional scores. A demonstration slide rule, a set of new math library books, and a set of Golden Gate books go to the second, third, and fourth regional winners, respectively.

The contest is open to accelerated college level, analytic geometry classes, and students selected individually by their teachers. For full details, students should see Mr. Henry in B‑222.
