Grapplers Defeat Wheeling Wildcats

The varsity grapplers evened out their Conference' record with a win over Wheeling and a loss to the Knights of Prospect. They ended the season with a six and six record.

At the Wheeling meet the Warriors fought to a 30 to 14 win over the Wildcats. Curtin started out the meet with a 5 to 0 win against Nute of Wheeling. Grutzius and Christiansen, at 103 and 112 pounds, both beat their opponents to give Maine West a 9 to 0 edge for the meet, but the Warriors lost the next two matches to the Wildcats. Helms got the Warriors more team points with a win over Grove, and Morrison followed :With a pin against Stavros. Ryden was then beat by Haddock, but Waecker pinned his opponent in 3:41. Szaltis then lost 7 to 0, but Yates of Maine finished the meet with an 8 to 3 win over Frediani. The final score was Maine West 30 and Wheeling 14.

The following day, Saturday, the Warriors traveled to Prospect where they put up a good battle. Curtin won his match by the score of 5 to 2, but the Warriors dropped the next three bouts to put them behind in the meet, 9 to 3. Dolphin, at 127 pounds, then sneaked by his opponent, 2 to 1. Following Dolphin were Klein, who lost to his man 6 to 0, and Helms, who tied Murphy of Prospect 2 to 2.

The Warriors proceeded to drop the next three to the Knights, but they finished out the meet with two wins in the 180 pound and heavyweight classes. The final score was Prospect 23 and Maine West 14.

On February 17 the Warriors went to the District meet where Curtin at 95 pounds and Dolphin at 127 pounds qualified for the Sectional meet. Curtin beat his opponent, Maple of Maine East, in the championship bout by the score of 3 to 2. In the other championship match that the Warriors took, Dolphin beat Garnett of Maine East by the score of 6 to 1.
