Maine West Editors Attend Convention |
|||||||||
| More than 700 students attended the forty-seventh annual Illinois State High School Press Association Convention held September 15 and 16 at the University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana. Five students and the sponsor of the Legend and the Westerner, Mr. George Walker, represented Maine West. Those representing the Legend were Viv Geiger '68, editor; and Ted Waskowski '68, business manager. Representing the Westerner were Mary Ann Jados '68, editor, and Lynne Handler '68 and Sandy Hurley '68, co-managing editors. Among the many planned activities were two general sessions and a number of smaller classes. The general sessions were held for all those attending the convention. Speaking at these sessions were Betsy Bliss of the Chicago Daily News and Morton Kondracke of the Chicago Sun-Times. Mr. George Walker spoke at a meeting for yearbook sponsors on the topic. "Solving Yearbook Problems." |
The smaller sessions were used by the students attending as a means of improving their respective publications. The question and answer period at the end of every session gave attention to individual problems of each school. This way the students were also given the chance to discuss their problems with student editors from other schools. Westerner representatives attended meetings to improve features, editorials, and the sports page. Those people from the Legend attended meetings to improve copy. Students also got, time to tour the campus Friday afternoon. The evening's activities included dinner at the Urbana-Lincoln Hotel, two dances at the student union, and the annual street dance. "I think we have gained a new outlook on newspaper techniques. This convention should prove to be profitable in many ways," reported Sandy Hurley. Individual conferences were held with each page editor to acquaint them with the ideas conveyed at the convention. |
