Students Answer Survey

At the end of the 1966-1967 school year the newly appointed editor of the Westerner took a survey of the effect the Westerner had on its readers.

Mary Ann Jados, the new editor, sent out dittoed sheets of questions to 206 students and faculty members. Questions concerned changes wanted in the paper and opinions on the present articles in the Westerner.

Generally students were in favor of more "Wandering Warriors," a column for letters to the editor, and more but shorter student personality interviews. About 105 students wanted to subscribe to the Westerner in their freshman year of college.

The survey revealed that students wanted the "Wandering Warrior" column to contain more controversial questions and wanted more articles on things happening during the school day.

A larger column for "Morfit," more surveys, freshman recognition, and
more pictures were also requested by the students answering the query.

Students did not want any reviews of books or too many reviews of currently playing movies.

Over 14 wanted the paper to carry interviews with famous people appearing in Chicago or famous radio personalities. Many wanted the stories to be about the popular singing groups and singers playing in Chicago.

There was also a great demand for sports coverage on underclassmen games. The survey also indicated that stories written by members of the teams would be popular.

At Homecoming students wanted an extra paper to come out with pictures of activities and the Homecoming Court. Some of the wishes expressed will be attempted.
