Del Finds Students Friendly
at Maine

Abdel Ilah Hachimi, m ore commonly known as "Del," is this year's AFS student. Del, who is a native of Morocco, has already graduated from high school. He'll be spending a year at Maine before returning to college in his country.

Del arrived in New York by jet and took a bus to Chicago. He came to his final destination on August 12.

Del's American brother, Bob Schwenke '68, and his family took Del on a trip that included Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and Cedar Rapids, Michigan. He also stated that he'd had a "wonderful time" sightseeing in the Loop before school officially opened.

Del finds many interesting comparisons between Maine West and his school. Two differences that cause him the most trouble are lunch and gym.

In Morocco the students go to school from 8 am. to noon and from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. This leaves two hours for lunch. He found it difficult to adjust to a 20-minute lunch period.
In Del's school physical training is the name of the course corresponding to gym here at Maine. Del said that this program is not nearly as extensive as the one at West. "I found it a little difficult at first."

Del's face lit up when asked about his opinion of Maine West's football games. "I found the band and the Pom-Pon girls and the cheerleaders very interesting. We didn't have anything like that."

Even though Del's school didn't have cheerleaders, they did have competitive sports. They play what we call soccer, but they call it football. Major sports in which Del participated were basketball and volleyball.

Del intends to join French Club, Ski Club, and Future Teachers of America Club. Due to the urging of Mr. Merel Marine, Debate coach, Del will also try his luck on the Debate Team.

When asked about his first impressions of Maine West, he replied, "All the students are very friendly, and I've made many friends. I noticed, too, that the teachers are friendly to the students."

Del will attend the university in Morocco when he returns to teach English.
