Gridmen Tie Glenbrook North

Maine West played its second game of the '68 season with some last second heroics by Butner and Banger to tie the game for the Warriors.

With 45 seconds to go in the fourth quarter Glenbrook North had the ball on the Maine 5-yard line with a chance to go ahead 21-20 with 40 seconds to go in the game. They were stopped just short of the goal line, and the game ended in a 20-20 tie.

In the opening play of the game Maine kicked off to the Spartans, who marched down to the Maine 4-yard line where Menary took it in for the T.D. Maine scored twice in the second quarter.

The first T.D. powerful running plays by Werner, Banger, and Szaltis drove to the Spartans 2-yard line with Banger taking it in for the six points. Hartley recovered a Glenbrook fumble, and the Warriors turned it into another T.D. to lead at the half 13-7.

Glenbrook scored in the third quarter on a 15-yard pass play to go ahead at the end of the third quarter 14-13.

In the fourth quarter Maine scored on a 56-yard pass play going from Banger to Felde, to make the score 20-14 at 10:58 of the fourth quarter. Butner of Maine intercepted a pass, and it looked as though Maine was going to score and put the game on ice. However, the Warriors fumbled the ball and Glenbrook recovered it.
The Spartans pushed to the Maine 1-yard line where their quarterback scored on a keeper play to tie the game, 20-20. Maine's defense stiffened and prevented the PAT. The Warriors tried to score but time ran out on them.

In the Maine Warriors' opener under their new stadium lights Peoria Central beat the Warriors 34-24, and the J.V. lost to Proviso West 34-13.

The Warriors started off with a roar as John Szaltis rambled off a 38-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The extra point missed, however; and before the first quarter ended, Peoria Central scored and went ahead 7-6.

Quarterback Bob Banger, who completed 9 of 19 pass attempts, completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kurt Felde. Again the extra point failed, but Maine was ahead 12-7 at the end of the half.

The Warriors did not score in the third quarter, but the defense was able to contain Peoria Central and keep the entire third quarter scoreless for both sides.

The Maine offense came to life in the fourth quarter, with Bob Banger providing the key play in both scoring drives. He ran through the Peoria defense and scored from the 3-yard line, and he passed to Felde for a second touchdown. Both extra point attempts failed making it four in a row.

The lack of defense cost the Warriors the game by allowing Peoria to score two quick touchdowns and come from behind to win in the last minute of last Friday's game.
