Conrad Birdie To Visit MW for 'One Last Kiss' |
|||||||||
| Mr. Albert Peterson, Conrad Birdie's manager, has just released the information that before leaving to serve in the army, the popular teenage idol, Conrad Birdie, will arrive at Maine West High School. His main objective will be to steal "One Last Kiss" from one of his many admirers, Kim MacAfee, and hear the echoing "Bye Bye Birdie." Members of "Conrad Birdie International Fan Club," should remember the dates of April 25, 26, and 27 and witness Conrad Birdie in person in the auditorium at 8 p.m. All seats will be on reserve for $1.50 and $2. Also on stage with Birdie will be a group selected from 400 students. To enable more students to have an opportunity of participating, many parts will be double-cast. Even though the production could have been successful with half the number of students, Mr. Robert Kuite wanted 10 more students to participate. The situation began when Kim was chosen at random by Mr. Peterson's secretary, Miss Rose Alvarz, out of the files of the "Conrad Birdie Fan Club." Kim's steady boyfriend, Hugo, is irritated at the thought of her devoted kiss, and he cannot understand this sacrifice. The MacAfees will have the pleasure of Birdie's presence in their home for the duration of the three days. Mr. MacAfee enjoys the publicity and the limelight. |
"What's the matter with kids today?" asks Mr. and Mrs. MacAfee. They are the typical but misunderstood parents of a teenager. They are confused by all the excitement and desire to forget the entire idea but are otherwise persuaded. Mutual problems of Miss Alvarz and Kim depress them al-though they "Put on a Happy Face" and confess "How Lovely To Be a Woman." "Birdie Spirit" will continue to be promoted through the Birdie Guard. The Birdie Guard consists of girls dressed in gold with high black boots. These girls represent the "Birdie Fan Club" and will guard the giant statue of the idol. The guard will also dispense any information about Conrad Birdie. In charge of this production is Mr. Kuite, general director and conductor. Also assisting in preparing the students for Birdie's arrival are Mr. Wilbur Schafer, vocal coach, Mr. Michael Cuthbert, publicity, and Mr. Garth Boyer, sets and costume design. Others involved in the success of the program are Mr. Robert Pelikan, technical and stage director, Mr. Conrad White, lighting; Mr. Verne Brownell, audio; and Mrs. Kathleen Lawyer, choreography. Mrs. Mary Dindinger is music secretary; Mrs. Nora Mae Ralph is director of business arrangements, and Mrs. Maryalice Howard, facilities. |
