Debate, Speech Contestants Rank High in Competition

Debate tournaments and speech contests have keynoted the action in the Speech Department.

Maine West was host to a 20-school tournament on February 24. Maine West J.V. debaters tied for third place but lost a higher place by a narrow margin due to less speaker points.

Final results are as follows in their respective order. The novice teams: New Trier East, New Trier West, Holy Cross; the J.V. teams: New Trier West, East Leyden, Rich East; and the varsity teams: Evanston, Highland Park, and New Trier East.

On March 2 Maine placed placed second in competing against 23 teams at Ridgewood High School. Individual honors for speaking went to Rich Janecek '70, who in competition with 92 other students, tied for first place; and Diane Glanke '69, who placed third in speaker points.

This ended the debate season with Maine West debaters capturing two second places, one third place, and one fourth place. The Maine West novice team has won three awards for speaking, which Mr. Merel Ma-rine, debate coach, stated was excellent.

A tri-school play-off between the three Maine schools will take place Saturday, March 16. This annual debate will cover the national debate topic of next year.
At a district speech events tournament at Niles West, the following students participated in individual events: Bob Connelly '68, serious reading; Bill Jacobs '70, prose reading; Dan Campagna '69, original oration and monologue.

Others included Viv Geiger '68, verse reading; Diana Quinn '68, comedy reading; Diane Clarke '69, after-dinner speaking; Carolyn Shayman '68, radio speaking; and Karen Gatsis '70, extemporaneous speaking.

Bob Connelly will go on to compete in a tournament sponsored by New Trier West on March 15-16.

Members of the Medea cast, a play being given by the Speech Department, include Lori Ware '68, Bob Connelly '68, Rich Wilson '69, Kathe Wilson '68, Lynn Boufford '68, Linsey Clark '68, Chris Osmand '68, and Jim Genellie '68.

Mr. Douglas Blatt, speech instructor, is quoted as saying, "We have a good nucleus from which to build at Maine West, because a number of students this year were successful and have discovered their best area of performance." He went on to say that this year has been a building year for Maine West speech competitors, and he hopes for good results next year.
