Can Maine West Students Display Responsibility? |
|||||||||
| The seminar on developing self-discipline for responsibility and privileges will have a great deal to consider before offering suggestions to the administration. Perhaps never in the history of Maine West has the vandalism problem been so severe. The recent defacing of our school's exterior face more dramatically exposes the immaturity of several Mainites. Destruction or marring of sanitary facilities or desks further illustrates the need for a realization of this serious condition. An effective solution must be found and must be found immediately. The appalling cost of repairs necessitates a united student effort to protect and maintain this institution. Smoking in the washrooms, insulting or unjustly criticizing faculty members, or offering misplaced loyalty again points to the sad attitude many students hold. |
Wearing "tennies" on a spirit-boosting day, buying taffy apples from Pep Club, or attending a Friday morning pep rally won't change the attitude or resolve the dilemma. Reporting fellow students who smoke would be a start. Loyalty to a friend is commendable, but protecting a student who is defying a state as well as a school law is foolish. Tax dollars are being needlessly spent to repair damages that should never have occurred. Tightened school restrictions will do little to thwart the vandalism or discourage the continuous breaking of school laws. The "sent home by dean" list would only continue to grow. Here is the chance for the students of Maine West to prove their responsibility and maturity. Before student cries of "what do they expect us to do" are raised, "they" (the administration) can observe student response to this plea for self-resolution of a serious problem which continues to grow. |
