Maine West Students, Place in Art Show

One hundred and ninety-three Maine West students were recently chosen as Scholastic Art Award winners for 1968, in a competition sponsored at Wieboldt's department store in Randhurst.

Maine West competed with 13 other schools in 17 different categories. The categories included oil painting, pencil drawing, mixed media, polymer, sculpture, ceramics, prints, and ink drawings.

This year the quota was one piece of art work for every two art students. The art teachers selected the pieces that were to be entered in the competition. A total of 750 pieces from all 14 schools were submitted.

All of the work entered was on display in Wieboldt's lower level from February 11 until March 2. Fifty out of the 750 pieces were awarded 'blue ribbons and
will go on to national competition in New York. Maine West won 39 out of the possible 50 blue ribbons.

The artists also displayed talent in winning three out of a possible five Hallmark Awards. The Hallmark Award winners are Carol Anderson '68, Michael Garcia '68, and Robert Wasmund '68.

The art' work was judged by a panel of four professional judges. Of the pieces from Maine West that were entered, students were awarded 73 out of a possible 100 gold key awards. 120 place awards or honorable mention awards, 39 blue ribbons, and three Hallmark Awards.

As of this date, the pieces which received blue ribbons and Hallmarks are in New York City awaiting further judging.
