Cinders Fly As Trackmen Capture C.S.L. Championship

Coach Joe Jobst's Maine West cindermen captured the C.S.L. indoor track championship on March 9. The Warriors ended up with a total of 50 points to 43 for their closest rival, New Trier West. In winning the championship the team set or tied four Conference records. Hammer and Mueting tied the Conference records in the 50-yard high hurdles and pole vault events respectively. At the same time LaBadie and Smith set new records in the 880-yard and 2 mile-run events respectively.

The frosh-soph team also won their championship with a total of 39 points, beating out Niles North who had a total of 34 points.

The trackmen had previously overwhelmed Palatine by a score of 87 to 22 on March 8.

Maine came in first in all events except the 50-yard dash and the shot put. First place finishes were chalked up Klages, Behrens, Hammer, LaBadie, Pruitt, Getsla, and Marrinson.

The sophomores put together an impressive triumph, winning 78 to 31. The mini-Warriors wrapped things up by routing Palatine 99 to 10.
The Warriors also came out the winners after they had engaged Maine South and Maine East in the Triangular meet held on March 2. The Warriors finished first while Maine East and Maine South came in second and third respectively.

The cindermen finished first in nine of the 12 events. Klages led off the massacre by taking first in the 2-mile. Smith won the mile, while LaBadie set a new record in the 880 with a time of 1:54.1. Hammer took first in both the high and low hurdles.

Behrens set a new record in the long jump with his 20' 31/4" effort and Nelson had a 5'10" high jump to give him first place in that category. Mueting won the pole vault event with a 13'6" effort.

The sophomores managed to edge past Maine East and win their meet also. They had a total of 53 points, while Maine East had 50. The freshmen were edged out by their opponents from Maine East. Maine East got 55 points to the little Warriors 461/2 points.
