Sports Slants

By MIKE WISNIEWSKI

We "country" folk have really been treated to good ol' hospitality, southern style, that is. Let me again commend the humbleness with which Maine West students were treated during last week's Regional basketball game-a fine lesson indeed from our city cousins!

Now a quick Bosnian proverb from my ancient book of Bosnian proverbs: "Es ist waertyu alsdz buvnem lasde, weqr tery sedtry klas." This loosely translated means: "It is nice to have upstanding students who are real 'assets' when it comes to promoting school spirit anywhere, anytime!"

Apologies are in line for the varsity wrestling team. Last edition we failed to give honors to Steve Waecker and Jim Morrison who both copped third place positions in the District finals. Also praise is in order for the fourth place finishes in the District finals by Jim Webster and Jim Wieser.

Congratulations to Maine West's own Dan Brinkman for his representation of the school in both the District and State finals. His fine efforts earned Maine West an eighth-place finish in the Hinsdale Central District Meet.
The basketball team has placed two men on the Honorable Mention list of the CSL All-Conference team. They are Bruce Kaechele and Harry Tistle. Both of them are seniors and both have been consistent high scorers for the team throughout the season. Maine South placed a total of five players on the list, more than any two of the other schools.

Coach Joe Jobst's indoor track team appears to be an all around winner, with the team setting new track records left and right. Kindly Mr. Jobst will answer any questions about his team taking the Conference title with "We think we're gonna take it!" Somehow he reminds me of Santa Claus telling an orphan that he is going to get the red fire engine that he wants so badly. Believe me, this orphan needs a fire engine.

Here's something that I bet a lot of sports fans don't know about. The "dearly beloved" sports editor tried to enter the District swimming meet for Maine West. However, I wasn't allowed to participate because of a really minor infraction of the rules. It seems t h at I couldn't bring my big, white, plastic duck with me.
