| Fourth year German students attended a German play at the Goodman Theater on Thursday, March 21. The eight students attending saw "Der Junge Goethe," which consisted of readings from the letters and writings of Johann Goethe. The students who attended were Gary Schoefernacher '89, Karen Saxon '69, Linda Klippert '68, Sue Lenhart '68, Faith Thorsen '68, Sharon Clark '68, John Lorbach '68, and Marilyn Coombs '69. The sponsors who accompanied the group were Miss Rosalie Streng and Miss Heidemarie Rupp. A College Night for juniors was held at Maine West on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. Over 100 colleges and universities had representatives present. Students should remember that many state schools have early deadlines and so prompt application is advisable. Seniors and sophomores were also urged to attend. Sophomores are reminded to be thinking of which girls they want to "decorate" the 1968-1969 Activities Calendar. The elections are scheduled for April 15-19. The Dads' Club sponsored the Annual Winter Sports Awards Night on March 20. About 200 athletes received awards. After a welcoming address by Mr. Herman L. Rider, principal, the awards were presented to the top athletes on the freshman, sophomore, junior-varsity, and varsity basketball teams and also to the top varsity and frosh-soph gymnasts. Others receiving |
awards were the leading varsity, sophomore, and freshman swimmers as well as the top varsity, jv sophomore, and freshman wrestlers. The Cheerleading and Pom-Pon Squads also were recognized. Students working on this year's musical Bye Bye, Birdie are quite enthusiastic about the progress being made. According to cast members, those participating are "very involved, and they really know what they're doing." Others. say, "The kids work well together, and the show should be really good." The Art III and IV classes of Mr. George Blanas are currently exhibiting their art history projects in the library. The students in the 2-3 period class worked with the subject of "Man Throughout the Ages," and the 5-6 period class had a choice of either "Perspective Throughout the Ages," or "Media Throughout the Ages." The projects represent one of the major grades for successfully completing the course. Also from the Art Department: an exhibit of one semester of college art work is being displayed in one of the second floor show cases. Shown is the work of Paul Maruska, a former Maine West student. The purpose is to show the quantity and quality of work which is completed in a single semester of college work. March 20 was Teacher Appreciation Day, when students showed some extra appreciation for the teachers. All the teachers wore white carnations as a symbol of the special day. Each teacher was also given an apple. |
