Social Science Department Plans Numerous Activities

One of the new activities currently being planned by the Social Science Department is a field trip to Springfield. This trip is in observance of the Illinois Sesquicentennial Year and is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30. Juniors who are taking U. S. history or have taken it in summer school are eligible to participate in this all-day excursion.

Places that will be visited include New Salem State Park, the Lincoln tomb at Oakridge Cemetery, Lincoln's home, the State Capitol Building, and the Illinois State Museum.

Another innovation begun a few weeks ago is the quote of the week, which is taken from the words of great men in American and European history. Each Monday a quote is posted outside C-219. Students can find the answer to the source of the quote by looking in pertinent books in the library. Persons having the correct answer should submit it to the switchboard operator before claiming as their prize a free book from the Path.
Beginning next fall a special section on party politics will be added to several of the government classes. The seniors participating in this program will be chosen by invitation and special selection. As a part of their study, these students will be observing the operation of local political parties and working with actual officials from these parties.

On a date to be announced Tri-S will participate in an annual internation similation at a Maine school. Prior to this conference each member of Tri-S is required to originate his own country. He is then given vital statistics about his country's population, financial affairs, and foreign obligations.

At the internation similation these various countries come together and "conduct the world."
