Diamondmen Start Season |
|||||||||
| After weeks of hard practice, the Maine West baseball team will finally begin their new season in a clash against Oak Park here tomorrow morning at 11. The game will be the first of what promises to be another successful season. Ever since Maine West opened, the baseball teams have earned for the school quite a reputation. Under Coach Al Carstens' guidance the Warriors have taken the Conference title each and every year, to say nothing of the State championship in 1963. A Conference title this year would be Maine West's eighth and Coach Carstens' eleventh in an unbroken string. Maine is in a different Conference this year, however, a Conference which Mr. Carstens feels is "the strongest in Illinois." He predicts that Maine South, Niles West, and Glenbrook North will provide the league's toughest competition. |
Five lettermen are returning this year: seniors Bob Banger, Kurt Felde, Bruce Kaechele, Harry Tistle, and Ted Waskowski. This year's squad consists mainly of seniors, followed by several juniors and one sophomore. The Warriors will be playing 18 games besides the elimination contests toward the end of the season. There will be some tough competition to look forward to, and Coach Carstens represented the team's feelings when he said, "We're going to try." The J.V., headed by Coach Gaston Freeman, will also face Oak Park here tomorrow. The sophomores, headed by Coach David Kennedy, and Coach Donald Olson's freshmen will be at Oak Park at 11 tomorrow. |
